Benny Benassi & Serj Tankian Join Forces for ‘Shooting Helicopters’

Benny Benassi

Benny Benassi recently heard his “Dance the Pain Away” — which features John Legend — remixed by Dutch producer Eelke Kleijn, but now he’s out with a fresh tune featuring System of a Down‘s Serj Tankian.

“Shooting Helicopter” builds up with Tankian’s haunting and painful vocals, but then drops some serious bass for the industrial feel and choppy atmospherics. The screeching wobbles make the track danceable, but simultaneously frightening and chaotic. It will be interesting to see if it gets more love when spun on dance floors or when performed live on festival stages after its September release.

Rap Mogul Suge Knight Hurt in Nightclub Shooting

Suge Knight

Chaos at a West Hollywood club over the weekend, when bullets went flying at a party thrown by singer Chris Brown at 1OAK on Sunset Boulevard. And Suge Knight, the founder of hip hop label Death Row Records among those wounded.

This happened at 1:30 Sunday morning, before last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. There were three victims. One remains in critical condition. The shooter reportedly hit Knight six times. One bullet in the arm, five in the chest, three apparently passing through. Deputies descended on the club, but the shooter escaped.

Detectives are looking through video to see if they can ID the shooter. If he has a criminal record, he may have a mugshot.

Zedd Wins 2014 MTV Clubland Award

The drama and the scandal of the MTV Video Music Awards have come and gone, and after the dust settled, a winner for the MTV Clubland Award was announced.

In a competitive field that also included Calvin Harris, Disclosure, Martin Garrix, DJ Snake and Lil Jon, Zedd and collaborator Hayley Williams walked away with the Moonman trophy for his “Stay the Night.”

But Zedd wasn’t the only dance music winner. These other acts also took home Moonmen trophies in the following categories:

– Sia“Chandelier” (Best Choreography)
– DJ Snake & Lil Jon“Turn Down for What” (Best Direction)

Congrats to this year’s winners!

M4SONIC Premieres ‘Chaos’ Video

In the vein of other classic instrumental hits — Robert Miles“Children,” Darude‘s “Sandstorm” and Swedish House Mafia‘s “Greyhound” — comes M4SONIC‘s “Chaos.” The Australian YouTube star just released his EP, M4, and with it, a new video for the track.

Viewers are bound to be entranced by M4SONIC crafting the epic peaks and valleys of the melody on a Novation Launchpad MIDI controller, which lights up as he seemingly composes the tune on the spot by pressing one of the many buttons available to him. It’s the kind of visual that led to his rise on the video-based website, which got him noticed by Sony Music Entertainment and Ultra Music, according to Billboard.

Hear “Chaos” and other tunes by downloading M4 on Beatport, iTunes and Amazon.

tyDi Drops Trailer Previewing ‘REDEFINED’ Album

Australia’s tyDi has been tearing up dance floors in recent years with hits such as the Kerli-featuring, badness-to-positivity-videoed “Glow in the Dark” and “Stay,” with guest vocals from former The Voice contestant Dia Frampton.

On Sept. 30, the cross-EDM beatsmith will release his next album, titled REDEFINED, and as a teaser, he’s put out a video trailer promoting the project.

Don’t expect much in the way of visuals, though. The highlight here is the computer-animated logo’s backing soundtrack, which showcases tunes that will presumably appear on the full-length effort.

A track list posted on Ultimate Music shows tyDi’s next outing could involve a number of guest collaborators. If that and this preview are any indication, this could be one of the biggest dance music releases of the year.

Calvin Harris Tops Forbes’ List of Highest-Paid DJs

Calvin Harris

Dance/EDM is big business — look no farther than the continually growing empire of Robert F. X. Sillerman’s SFX Entertainment as evidence. But executives aren’t the only ones raking in cash, as proven by Forbes’ 2014 list of the world’s highest-paid DJs.

Topping the Electronic Cash Kings 2014 ranking is Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, who pulled in $66 million over the past 12 months and even out-earned rapper Jay Z and country singer Toby Keith, according to the magazine.

Check out the top earners and tallies below, along with their rank from last year in parentheses.

1. Calvin Harris, $66 million (1)
2. David Guetta, $30 million (3)
3. TIE: Avicii / Tiësto, $28 million (6, 2)
5. Steve Aoki, $23 million (11)
6. Afrojack, $22 million (7)
7. Zedd, $21 million
8. Kaskade, $17 million (9 (tie))
9. Skrillex, $16.5 million (9 (tie))
10. Deadmau5, $16 million (5)
11. Hardwell, $13 million
12. TIE: Armin van Buuren / Steve Angello, $12 million (8, 4 (as part of Swedish House Mafia))

Kimbra’s New Video is a Dancing ‘Miracle’

Kimbra borrows a page out of Kiesza’s “Hideaway” playbook with the music video for “Miracle.” The Australian-based singer dances with the people of New York — from mailmen to mimes — in the hipster-disco tune’s video clip, serving up a good time for the denizens of the City That Never Sleeps.

Given that Kiesza’s clip was nominated for a few MTV Moonmen this year — as was Björk’s “It’s Oh So Quiet,” which also features a brunette dancing with the people in her neighborhood — Kimbra could be a contender for next year’s awards show.

Overload Your Senses with Steve Angello’s ‘Wasted Love’ Video

Swedish House Mafia alum Steve Angello promises that his forthcoming album, Wild Youth, won’t be “classified” as an EDM album. But the music and the video for the “Dougy from The Temper Trap“-assisted “Wasted Love” manages to satisfy fans of dance music nicely.

The clip is almost dream-like, featuring a slew of people involved in what looks to be a post-apocalyptic and transcendental environment that messes with their senses. It’s overload for sure, but still tells a heartbreaking story over an uplifting progressive house melody.

An odd juxtaposition? We’re betting probably and probably on purpose.

Ariana Grande and Zedd ‘Break Free’ with New Release

Ariana Grande has been enjoying success with her smash hit “Problem” featuring Iggy Azalea. Now her label, Republic Records, has a message for all the “Arianators” out there, regarding the much anticipated follow-up, “Your space galaxy Ariana dreams are about to come true. Are you ready for Break Free? Watch and enjoy this pop space adventure (and your new fave Ari jam!) that just premiered on VEVO.”
